Roof tents: how to work out if your roof takes one
Dynamic vs static load, and why the number on the rack is not the number that matters.
Roofs have two ratings. Dynamic load is what the roof carries while moving; static load is what it carries parked. Static is usually several times higher, which is why a tent rated well over the dynamic figure can still be legal parked.
The number that limits you is the lowest in the chain: vehicle roof rating, rack rating, and mounting hardware. Take the smallest, not the largest.
Add the tent weight, the occupants and the bedding, then compare against the static figure. Compare the tent weight alone against the dynamic figure.
